Nuria in the school

My experience at the schools and high schools in Fót, Hungary, has been one of the most enriching of my life. Since I started attending once or twice a week, I’ve immersed myself in a completely new environment that has changed my perspective in many ways. Primarily, I attend English classes, and through them, I’ve learned a lot not only about the language but also about the teenagers who speak it.

The classes at the high schools last 45 minutes, which allows us to cover a good amount of content in a short period of time. During the first few days, I introduced myself to the class so that my classmates and teachers could get to know me better. This helped me integrate more easily and feel comfortable in the environment. In addition to theoretical lessons on topics like conditionals and vocabulary, we also enjoy playing games that help us learn in a more dynamic and fun way.

Throughout the lessons, we often watch documentaries on various topics and then discuss them in class. This approach not only helps us improve our language skills but also encourages us to reflect on the content and develop a deeper understanding of the topics we cover. The games, discussions, and interactive activities make the classes more enjoyable and enriching.

What has impacted me the most is how the young people in Hungary, although very different in culture and customs from what I was used to, have many similarities to those in my country. The classes are dynamic, and while the students can sometimes be reserved, they have an infectious energy. I’ve really enjoyed interacting with them, listening to their ideas, and discovering how they think and relate to one another.

In addition, one of the greatest gifts I’ve received from this experience is the opportunity to learn Hungarian. Although at first, it seemed like an almost impossible challenge due to how different it is from my native language, I’ve made enough progress to feel comfortable in everyday conversations. The Hungarian lessons, along with daily interactions, have allowed me to improve little by little, and although I’m not fluent yet, every new word or expression I learn fills me with satisfaction.

Another positive aspect of being in Fót has been the opportunity to make new friends in the schools. When teaching ends I can meet with the students and with their friends in the Youth Center at Somlyó lake to have common programs which I enjoy very much. From the beginning, the people I’ve met have been very welcoming. I’ve made friends among the teachers and staff of the institute as well. These friendships have not only helped me integrate into the community but also opened doors to new opportunities. Thanks to these connections, I’ve found another small job that has allowed me to learn more about Hungarian life and culture while continuing to develop my career.

In summary, my time at the schools and institutes in Fót has been a unique experience. I’ve learned about Hungarian culture, improved my English and Hungarian, and made friendships that I hope will last a long time. This opportunity has allowed me not only to grow professionally but also to enjoy the human and cultural richness that can only be experienced when immersed in a different community.
