Weaving into sustainability in the Oasis
The Oasis project is an experimental project launched at the end of 2021, in which we amplify and test new (human) ecological coexistence patterns on a large scale under the aegis of regenerative development. We believe that there is a way out of the ecological, economic, and social crises of our time - and that we have the opportunity to achieve a future that is more peaceful, abundant, inclusive, and gentle than any previous era in human history.
To facilitate this, we have brought together professionals whose collaboration is essential to bring to life a livable, positive social vision in one of Hungary's first large-scale permaculture projects, an 80-hectare landscape-based project. This includes experts in ecology, landscape architecture, architecture, hydro(geo)logy, soil science, regenerative agriculture, forestry and agroecology, human ecology, community building, social enterprise, culture, arts, and many other fields, uniting their perspectives and ideas. Over the past three years, we have spent time preparing, surveying, planning, and planting 60,000 trees.
In the spring of 2023, we decided to step into the light and invite all those who are partners in this to learn and practice on our permaculture model site built in the spirit of regenerative development. Our specific goal is to provide a training ground for professionals who wish to (re)train in a regenerative direction that truly addresses the urgent challenges of our time.
The heart of the area is a former campsite and holiday village in the Lengyeltóti-Kéktó area. One of our first goals is to transform the now forgotten and dilapidated holiday village into a bustling festival center and vibrant community retreat where we can connect with nature, each other, and ourselves.
The goals and activities of the Oasis project are in line with the values of the Szatyor Association, so we organized one of our group volunteer activities in cooperation with them. In the project, we worked on creating the heart of the event space, the community area.
Volunteers participated in the following activities:
**Eco-architecture:** building with sustainable materials: structures made of clay, straw bales, and creating the beds of the mandala garden using natural weaving techniques with hazel branches.
**Permaculture:** creating a Mediterranean garden in the established beds and the central area, using different techniques and methods.
**Cooking:** participating in kitchen tasks, preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner, baking bread.
**Optional task:** Crafting, creating festival decorations.
Fifteen volunteers from seven countries (Spain, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Romania, Netherlands, Morocco) participated in the three-week event.
This was the first event of the Szatyor Association implemented at an "external" location, and we learned a lot about what works well and what needs more attention in the future.
